How to protect yourself from scam

Criminals use scam to steal your money, identity and logins. The term 'scam' is used in the context of internet fraud and is one of the common dangers on the internet. There are different types of scam: phishing scam, mail scam, pension scam, customer support scam, love scam and many more. Scammers are getting more and more creative. Scam emails are fraudulent emails that try to trick you into giving out confidential information. The scammers are getting better and better with their scams, meanwhile pretending to be trustworthy by using your name or that of someone you know.

What is the typical behaviour of scammers?

  • Scammers will try to give the impression that your money is currently not safe.
  • They pretend to be representatives of authorities (e.g. tax authorities), police or even well-known companies such as Microsoft, Google, Apple etc.
  • They want to put you under pressure by threatening that you will get into trouble if you do not comply with their demands.
  • A warning signal can also be unbelievable promises. These are usually linked to conditions - often in the form of financial advances.

How can you protect yourself from this?

As a general rule, always be critical and cautious of messages or calls from unknown persons. Before responding to a message, be sure to check the source. Also check the content of the message for signs of fraud, such as spelling or grammatical errors. Do not open links or attachments from suspicious emails. Always use a strong password and do not share it with anyone.
